After the Cold War and the opening of the East, the House of Habsburg got back former lands in the Tokaji wine-growing region. Since the Habsburg family had little experience with viticulture, they joined forces with the German Löwenstein dynasty. This noble joint venture resulted in Tokaj wines of the finest quality. The history of the Princes of Löwenstein and their wines goes back to 1611. The winemaking tradition extends from the beginnings in the town and county of Wertheim to Kleinheubach, where Prince Carl Thomas maintained a fabulous wine cellar in the 18th century. During the German Imperial Era, the top locations in Hallgarten in the Rheingau and the Kallmuth monastery vineyard, which has been cultivated since the Middle Ages, have been acquired by the House of Löwenstein.
