Florian Bilicki, was one of the most important figures in the Tokay scene of the first half of the twentieth century. His past before arriving in the Tokaji region remained a myth. His older brother Marian, after finishing studies in Budapest, bought vineyards and a cottage in Abaújszántó, and brought his younger brother Florian to build a business. Not having previously nothing to do with wine, he created one of the most prosperous Tokaji producing companies of his time. He learned so fast and well, that his friends and neighbours Flegmann and Zimmermann - largest producer of the interwar era - offered him to manage their estates. Both fell into debts during the 1929 crisis, not being able to pay their manager. This way, Florian acquired the famous Vinea Tokaj Hegyaljai Bortemelü Kft. label and some fine vineyards from his former employers. Florian had to run the winery alone, after his brother Marian died suddenly in 1932. Bilicki lost his company and vineyards in 1945 to the Soviet occupation forces - they left him one room in the old cottage, which his brother once bought. Never being married and without children, Florian Bilicki died in Abaújszántó in 1961. Today, the old Bilicki cellars in Abaújszántó belong to the Pendits winery.
